Hill Quartz Prospect The Diamond Hill (DH) Quartz Prospect is located in South Carolina, between Anderson and Abbeville, near the small town of Antreville. Quartz crystals have been found at DH for at least a hundred years. Chester Karwoski purchased the property in 2003 and has been digging quartz crystals there since that time. Most DH quartz crystals are milky white or translucent. Most of these have the typical quartz crystal shape, but some have the “skeletal” habit. Occasionally, veins and pockets are found that contain crystals of smoky quartz and of amethyst. The smoky and amethyst crystals can be found as single crystals, as clusters of crystals, and as crystals on matrix (usually white quartz covered with small drusy crystals). The smoky and amethyst crystals can be large, with individual crystals often 5 cm (2") and larger, and clusters reaching 20 cm (8") and larger. Some crystals have both smoky and amethyst coloration at the same time, and we term these “smoky-amethyst”. Beginning in 2007, we have been finding some very large and spectacular clusters of smoky quartz and amethyst. To see specific specimens, click in either the boxes above or below. Because many of these spectacular specimens are large and unique, it is difficult for anyone to gauge their value. We have shown these pieces to several mineral dealers, and the values we have indicated are kind of a “best estimate”. Our preference is that these pieces be sold to museums, to be placed on public display. If a museum is interested in purchasing, we are happy to consider a significant price reduction. We will also entertain serious offers from private individuals. |
