Fieldtrip Report:
Walker Creek Kyanite,
Buncombe County, N.C.
July 9th, 2005
What can I say about Walker Creek other than it is a great place to collect quality kyanite crystals. Since my book came out two and a half years ago, many people have visited this site, I have been told by numerous Rockhounds that they really appreciated the chance to collect at this site for themselves. I have always believed that everyone who is willing to make the hike up the mountain should have an equal and fair opportunity to add some of this material to their collection. There is no shortage of material here and you will always come home with some nice specimens as we did on this trip!
We started off at the usual meeting location and caravaned several carloads to the parking area in the forest at the entrance to Perkins Trail, from the trail entrance it is about a mile and a half hike up the mountain to the Walker Creek Kyanite site. When we arrived at the trailhead I observed that some of the members were already at the site, altogether we had 21 members show for the trip.
The morning hike to the mine.
As usual we had several new members with us.
New member Jim, (I can't remember the last name)
Potential new members Robbie and Micheal, they had used my book to find the location and have visited the site several times.
More new members Charles from SC and his Brother.
Drew and Crystal came down from Virginia to join us for the day.
Translucent kyanite that Drew found.
