Fieldtrip Report:
Tweedy Garnet Mine
Burke County, N.C.
April 1st, 2006Well, this will be short and sweet, I met with several M.A.G.M.A. and Henderson County members at 8:00 a.m. at the Armadillo parking lot, we caravaned to the Holiday Inn parking lot at exit 105 in Morganton at 9:30 a.m. and met with Debbie and Betty who were waiting for us, after getting to the mine, we set of in several directions and collected lots of garnets, some small, some large, mostly iron eaten, a few may cut, I took several pics only to find out later that my disk did not read the files?, advice: do not buy a "lexar" memory stick for your sony camera, this is the second time this has happened 8^(, I came home with about 50 quarter size garnets and one biggie golfball or larger, when we left, Grant and Nancy were still in a hole, Grant had around 200 at that time, the old mine is still producing, it just needs a little overburden cleared off to get back to the good stuff. Below are the two pics I got:
Partners in crime, Miles and Greg Fillipelli.
