Fieldtrip Report:
Vulcan Quarry,
Pacolet, S.C.
July 15th, 2005
Richard explained to us that his quarry has one of the largest rockcrushers in the country, he let us observe the thing in action, it was like being on a school fieldtrip, very cool.
First, the Titan Dumptruck is loaded at the bottom of the quarry and hauls a load (60 tons) of large boulders to the crusher, the tires on this truck stand over 6 feet high, the truck costs 400,000 dollars.
Next, the truck dumps it's load into the crusher.
The giant crusher is powered by a 500 hp engine, it takes 68 seconds to grind 60 tons of rock into football or smaller size pieces, some of the boulders are as big as a small car when dumped into this thing.
A little over a minute later, the water washes the crusher clean as it waits for the next load.
The rock is then deposited onto a conveyor belt hundreds of feet below the crusher and hauled to the top of the quarry.
To work on the lower workings of the crusher and belt, the employees must climb up and down this few hundred foot spiral metal staircase.
The rock travels several hundred feet up and out of the quarry pit...................
Where it is deposited at the top into piles.
