Area Gem and Mineral Association Liability Insurance MAGMA has liability insurance that covers our club on digs at various mines. What does this mean? If we approach a mine or quarry with the intent of collecting, they may ask for proof of liability insurance. Our first time applying this insurance was at the fluorescent dig in Spruce Pine 10-20-07. What does it cover? This is liability insurance that covers the owner of the property that we are accessing against any damage that we, as a club, may do to said property. Does this insurance cover me when I am alone collecting somewhere without the club? NO, this insurance covers only official organized M.A.G.M.A. club events. Who pays for this insurance? As a club, M.A.G.M.A. draws in several thousand dollars per year from donations to the land fund, mine management and our MAGMA "Platinum Membership". The Platinum Membership covers the cost of this insurance. This liability insurance is a blanket policy that covers all our members on a dig, "Standard" and "Platinum". Since our Platinum members are paying the bill for the insurance, we have a new policy in effect for upcoming digs as follows: Any dig that is announced as an "Official M.A.G.M.A. Field trip" will have details in the announcement concerning insurance requirements. If the dig requires that we show proof of liability insurance, all non-platinum members and non-MAGMA members attending that dig will be required to donate $5.00 to the insurance fund for that dig. This fee only applies to digs that require proof of liability insurance! This insurance also benefits non MAGMA members as well. Our blanket insurance covers all our members, the paid "platinum" members and the free "standard" members. If a federation club member wants to join us for one of our trips, they only need to show up at the dig. At that time they can either join MAGMA as a paid member or sign up for the standard/free membership. Once on the club list, they are completely covered under our insurance. This effectively allows anyone to join us for a dig at any time, MAGMA member or not! MAGMA liability insurance coverage is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round. All persons attending a MAGMA dig can simply sign up as a standard (FREE) club member at any dig they attend to be completely covered by our insurance.
