Fieldtrip report:

Hickory Quarry, Hickory, N.C.
September 6, 2003

By Maitri

What a wild ride that was... after parking in a plain dirt lot, we rounded the corner and found a mountain of large gravel and boulders to climb over. the bulldozer guy was just getting started (it was 7 a.m. after all, it got light on the drive down the mountain)...

After we got safely across, we spread into the sides of the pit. Riviera knew where to head and I followed him down below (really, about 1/2 way down to the bottom)... I spent the morning there, right below a huge plate of stilbite hanging on the wall... lots of pieces in the rock piles below. some had to be chiseled off rocks too big to transport.

Phil Potter was there from the Colburn Museum looking for a great specimen to add to their collection, he had a great time although he suffered a damaged finger !,

Doug Dover also had a great day, he was King of the Hill !

A view into the pit.

The bulldozer finally broke through and brought some road scrape down to dump... while he was there he graciously turned over the ground from a vein but ended up dumping it right back on top of itself... but he meant well...

Riviera took a stab at loosening a huge plate of stilbite from the face of this rock... he got some of it, but had to leave some there. but he did manage to knock down a couple of nice sized chunks... not sure what happened when they hit. (Riviera?)

It was a great day.
