Fieldtrip report:
Hammett Grove Corundum,
South Carolina
February 7, 2004A great day of collecting today, members of MAGMA met in Spartanburg S.C. and then proceeded to the site to collect corundum:
Getting ready for the hunt.
This area is known for a variety of corundum in a variety of colors, mostly white is found but we were able to locate some nice blue, pink and a few green and yellow crystals:
Screening for corundum crystals.
I found over 10 pounds of corundum massive and crystals, everyone else found about the same, at times when screening, the corundum made up 95% of the material in the screen. Dave found one piece that weighed approximately 2.5 -3 pounds, I found one excellent hex crystal that weighs just under a half pound, it is pink, purple, blue, green, and white, it looks like a piece of candy:
After I found this piece Tina decided to dig a bit !
We checked out a camp in the woods.
Checking a creek for corundum.
Besides being known for great corundum specimens Hammett Grove is also known for indian artifacts up to 7,000 years old, many soapstone bowls and points have been recovered from this site, today the artifacts are protected, pictures only, below is a pic of an indian bowl that was started but not finished, still attached to the giant soapstone boulder.
As always another great day of collecting and exploring with friends.
