Field Trip Report:

Gap Creek Agate
South Carolina
February, 2005
By John Deney

Took a couple of trips to Gap Creek, a week ago last Thursday and again this last Tue. Dug in a hole I've dug in the last couple of times. Both times someone had been there before me. They seem to dig the top 12" or so and I had to dig through their diggings to get to the layer of rock containing the onyx agate material. Although the agate material is not large it polishes into attractive specimens. I wonder if there was a mine of some kind in the area, does anyone know the history of this site? Following are some of the specimens I collected.

Banded onyx and quartz.

Above pics: thick red onyx with quartz.

Multi colored onyx.
