Fieldtrip report:

I-26 new roadcut between N.C. and Tennessee
January 1, 2004

Hello all, there is no better way to start the new year than with good friends and rockhunting, what a combination!, Doug and Beth drove down from Charlotte and we hit the I-26 roadcut to find a bunch of goodies, Maitri and her Rockmonkey stopped by to join in the fun for a while, Doug now has about half the I-26 connector in the back of his truck.

We hit a couple of sites on the Tennessee side to collect the usual material:, unakite, pyrite, epidote etc.

Doug and Beth ready to start the new year collecting

Doug collecting pyrite

Doug and Beth brought chicken and plenty of other goodies to eat for lunch

After collecting another ton of unakite etc. we proceeded to site 52 in my book to collect calcite

Matrix piece with pockets of calcite crystals

Most calcite crystals found at this site are small, this is about as big as they get, 1/4" crystals in pocket covered with iridescent coating to give it the gold color

As always another great day in the field with friends, happy new year !!!!
