Fieldtrip report:

Cranberry Iron Mine,
Avery County, N.C.,
January 14th, 2005

_____________________

Had a mini-fieldtrip today with John D. we headed to Avery County to check out the Cranberry Iron Mine and see what the bat people had done to the site, I had not been here in around 10 years, so after hiking around the dumps for a couple of miles we finally located the mine:

John D. outside at the old mine works.

A view from the top, this mine was closed over four years ago because of the bats that migrate to the mine, you can see the 6 foot fence that covers the main entrance.

Me and John in mine.

The other shafts in the area are not fenced and we were able to visit some of them.

Inside, the ceiling is around 30 feet.

Outside there is literally tons of dump material forming mountains of rock covering the area.

One of the tunnels extending into the mountain.

An interesting day!
