Fieldtrip report:

Chunky Gal Mountain,
Clay County, N.C.,
October 1997

________________

Hello all, this is the first report that I am restoring from my old harddrive and fieldtrip book, some of these reports go back 10 years and have some old pics of mines in the area etc. I hope you enjoy them. October 1997, me and RJ were regulars at Chunky Gal Mountain, we would camp there most of the winter and hunt the various mines for corundum, even then RJ was a hardcore rockhound and was into the hunt:

RJ carrying the tools on the way to the Gal.

RJ finds a likely spot near the top and begins digging.

I was trying to get a shot of the two of us, thats me on the right (thats right, no hair) flying through the air, I almost did'nt get in the pic.

This was our old camper, it looks big but you would'nt believe the places we have taken it.

After spending the morning on the Gal, we decided to drive down to Buck Creek Road and visit the Big Shaft Mine, even in 97 if you did not know where the mine was it was hard to spot in the woods, this is a pic of the entrance just a few yards away.

Big Shaft Mine.

Birdnest on the wall in the mine.

Bat hanging out in the mine.

On to the next adventure!
