You never know whats in your backyard. I thought I would put up a report on the trip I took yesterday with a friend. Not actually in my backyard, we did drive a few miles to the site, my friend, a member of our club, has spent the last 18 years hunting Indian artifacts. He had been calling me leaving messages for over a month telling me about this great field he had found, he claimed he had collected a 5 gallon bucket of Indian material, of course I thought he was exaggerating but I finally gave in and went with him yesterday. Before we left his house he showed me what he had been finding, and yes there was about a 5 gallon bucket worth of material, points, scrapers, axes, and a whole bunch of stuff I don't know anything about. We got to the site just as it began to rain, I broke out the umbrella and began walking the field, this was my first time actually looking for something like this, I have found several points while screening for sapphires, but had never went to a site specifically for artifacts, it was a lot of fun!
Some scrapers and a quartz point.
Closeup of 2" quartz point.
Indian pottery.
Thumb scraper.
Point made of flint.
Hand axes and large scraper.
Scraper.
These are just a few of the cool things I found, I also found about 10 pounds of stuff I can't id, maybe John D. can help. My friend found 9 points some of them 2", this is a great site. Now I need a display for Indian artifacts from N.C. to go along with all the other N.C. rocks.
