I went to take a break from running the machine. When I came back, I noticed a crowd had gathered around a rock...

The rock, pictured on the left, was one of the first pieces I removed from a deep hole that morning. It weighed around 12-1,500 pounds. It laid on top of the pile all day with people walking around it. Around 2:30 a man and his wife and daughter had heard about our dig and decided to join us. A little while later, his wife spotted emeralds showing on the rock. For the next several hours, members took turns pounding away at the boulder to remove matrix specimens with emerald.

The Florida family with the largest piece of emerald matrix recovered from the boulder.
