Fieldtrip Report:

Black Mountain Kyanite and Sapphire,
Buncombe County, N.C.,
September 10th, 2005

____________________

Tom Hatley helped Josh break up his 400 lb. boulder, so Josh gave him this little kyanite specimen for his work!

Closeup of Toms specimen loaded with sapphires.

Josh, Rockpup and three remaining sections of the boulder that he kept.

Members Robbie and Micheal found a few boulders of their own.

A few more specimens to take home and clean.

This is about half of what Steven and Thomas found!

I have been collecting at this site for several years and have many nice specimens from this location, I am in the process of cleaning the three pieces that I did bring home and will add the pics of the cleaned specimens in about a week.

For those reading this report, you should be aware that this site is not open to public collecting, only organized group trips are allowed here, you can contact our M.A.G.M.A. club for more information at www.wncrocks.com or 828-683-1048, our club will probably lead one trip per year to this site as long as collecting is permitted by the owners, and again thanks to Rob Bagley for helping us set up this trip.

As I said, this was one of the best trips of the summer, everyone found numerous pieces for their collections, some of the largest pieces I have seen from this site were found and removed, the sapphires were the best color I have seen, and as John D. pointed out, everyone was very generous and willing to share with others, thats what makes our club the best one out there, the quality of our members, the quality of our trips is an added bonus 8^)

See you next time, Rick
