Above photos: Huge 77 pound plate of Crabtree matrix material, from the famous Crabtree Emerald Mine in Spruce Pine, N.C.. This piece was mined in 1974 by Ken Kyte. It is covered with bright green emeralds on both sides. It has thick coatings of biotite mica with gemmy emeralds showing under the biotite, the largest emerald showing in the white matrix is 1" in diameter. The specimen also shows numerous almandine garnets and tourmaline (schorl) crystals. This specimen spent several years on display in the Henderson County Mineral and Lapidary Museum in Hendersonville, NC. This may be one of the largest specimens of matrix material from this mine still in circulation. Can be viewed by appointment.
